My Qualifications

My Qualifications

I have a strong understanding of our field, both where we are and where we need to go. For many years, I developed conferences and seminars, studying the needs and direction of our profession. I spent years evaluating what we had to learn now to prepare for the future. My broad perspective will help us plan where we, as a profession and as a professional society, are going next.

I have strong leadership skills. I am a leader, a manager, a mentor, and a consensus-builder. I am always willing to let my voice be heard asking "why" and questioning if we are doing the right things.

Working in Europe has given me a stronger understanding of the issues of technical communicators outside the US. I have spoken at chapter meetings and conferences around the world. A significant part of our future growth will come from new members outside the US and I would like to be in a position to help those membership areas grow.

I have a business perspective. For almost 20 years, I was a principal of SOLUTIONS, a technical communication consulting and training company. I know how to focus on customers (members!) and I understand the important of monitoring finances. I am a problem solver. I can analyze issues, gather input, evaluate alternatives, and make decisions. I know how to plan and how to get things done.

My experience in STC communities spans geographies, practices, and decades., All of my STC experience will help in my work as 2nd Vice President and beyond. I have attended meetings and spoken at dozens of chapters. I have a strong understanding of the similarities and differences among chapters. I have been a member of many SIGS, and have participated in the Management SIG since it began.
